Overview
Play Roms Online was a site I ran that let visitors play classic console games straight in the browser — no downloads, no setup, just pick a game and play. It supported a handful of consoles:
Every game was fully playable in-browser rather than just previewed or streamed — the emulation itself ran client-side, which at the time meant leaning on Java applets to do the heavy lifting.
What Killed It
That reliance on Java turned out to be the project's expiry date. As browsers moved away from supporting Java applets running in-page, the emulators simply stopped working — there was no real path to keep them running once that plumbing was pulled out from under the site. Rather than rebuild the entire emulation layer on a different technology, I let the project wind down.
Looking Back
It's a fairly familiar story for a lot of browser-plugin-era projects — Flash, Java applets, Silverlight all had their moment, and sites built on top of them had a shelf life dictated by decisions made well outside their own control. Play Roms Online is preserved on the Wayback Machine, back when it was still fully playable.
